Asosiasi Pesepakbola Profesional (PFA) mengatakan Inggris telah kehilangan legenda. Mantan rekan setimnya di Inggris, Alan Mullery, mengingat Hunter sebagai seorang lelaki yang tidak pernah kehilangan semangat kompetitifnya, bahkan ketika sedang berlibur. "Kami dulu kerap persiar bersama," katanya kepada televisi Sky Sports.
Hunter memainkan 726 pertandingan dalam 15 tahun di Elland Road. Di tim hebat yang dikelola oleh Don Revie, dia memenangkan gelar Divisi Pertama pada tahun 1969 dan 1974, Piala FA 1972 dan Piala Liga serta Inter-Cities Fairs Cup dua kali.
